Supranational Governance and the Democratic Deficit in the EU
Quick fact
The EU can make laws that bind all member states, often by a majority vote—so a country can be compelled to adopt a policy it opposed, without any single national mechanism to veto it.
Why this is interesting
Every citizen of an EU member state is subject to laws they did not directly vote for, and yet their an elected national parliament cannot simply overturn those laws. How did this come to be, and is it a democratic problem?
