Habits and the Habit Loop: Cue, Routine, Reward

Quick fact

In a 2012 study from MIT, researchers were able to trigger a habit in rats and then watch as the mental pattern moved from the prefrontal cortex to the basal ganglia, showing that habits are physically stored in a different part of the brain.

Why this is interesting

Why is it that you can drive to work on autopilot and not remember the trip? The same brain mechanism that allows that also runs your daily habits — and once you see the loop, you can rewire it.
