Photon Emission and Absorption
Quick fact
A single atom can absorb or emit a photon, which is like a particle of light, in an instant.
Why this is interesting
Have you ever wondered why objects glow when heated? It all starts with tiny particles absorbing and emitting light in ways that defy our everyday intuition.

Understanding Photon Emission and Absorption
When an electron in an atom gains energy, it moves to a higher energy level. When it returns to a lower one, it releases the extra energy as a photon. This process is how atoms interact with light and is behind everything from glowing embers to lasers.
A deeper explanation
Photon emission and absorption are governed by quantum mechanics. Electrons in atoms can only occupy specific energy levels. When they absorb a photon, they jump to a higher level; when they drop back down, they emit a photon. This exchange of photons is how energy moves through matter at the atomic scale and underpins many natural and technological processes.
