How Cultural Ecology Explains Human-Environment Adaptations

Quick fact

Unlike environmental determinism, which claims that the environment directly dictates cultural traits, cultural ecology shows that similar environments can foster very different cultural adaptations—and cultures can adapt to the same environment in multiple ways. For example, the Inuit of the Arctic developed sophisticated hunting tools and social cooperation to survive extreme cold, while the Bedouin of the Sahara developed nomadic herding strategies to cope with aridity.

Why this is interesting

Why do some societies thrive in deserts while others flourish in rainforests? The answer lies not in the environment alone, but in how cultures adapt to it.
