How Environmental Impact Assessments Are Legally Mandated
Quick fact
The first law to make EIAs mandatory was the U.S. National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, a single page long, signed into law on January 1, 1970. Since then, more than 190 countries have adopted similar legal frameworks, including the EU's EIA Directive and the international Espoo Convention.
Why this is interesting
You might have heard about a new building or highway being approved, but what ensures its environmental impact is even considered? Many countries legally require a detailed assessment before any major project gets a green light.
