Photosynthesis
Quick fact
A single leaf can produce enough oxygen for two people per day through photosynthesis.
Why this is interesting
Did you know that every breath of air you take is partly thanks to a leaf on a tree? Plants do something amazing with sunlight.

Understanding Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create energy-rich compounds like glucose. This happens mainly in the leaves, where chlorophyll helps capture light energy. The result is not only food for the plant but also oxygen released into the air we breathe.
A deeper explanation
Photosynthesis works through two main stages: light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle. In the first stage, sunlight is absorbed by chlorophyll in chloroplasts to split water molecules, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. The second stage uses carbon dioxide from the air to create glucose, which the plant uses for energy and growth. This process is vital for life on Earth because it provides both food and oxygen.
