Asteroseismology
Quick fact
By measuring the characteristic overtones of a star’s oscillations, astronomers can determine its density profile and interior rotation rate with a precision comparable to using an MRI on the Sun.
Why this is interesting
We all know that stars are huge balls of gas, but what if you could listen to them to find out what’s inside? In astronomy, we use the star’s own vibrations as a sonogram to peek beneath the surface.
