Bridging versus Bonding Social Capital in Community Resilience
Quick fact
Communities with high bonding social capital (strong ties within a group) but low bridging social capital (weak ties to outside groups) can become 'bonded but isolated', which paradoxically makes them more vulnerable to large-scale disasters than communities with a balanced mix of both.
Why this is interesting
Ever wondered why some tightly-knit communities fall apart after a disaster, while others with looser connections bounce back faster? The answer may lie in the different kinds of 'glue' holding them together.
