The Bystander Effect in Emergency Response and Group Dynamics

The term 'bystander effect' was coined after the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, where 38 witnesses reportedly failed to call for help. Subsequent experiments by John Darley and Bibb Latané found that the presence of others significantly decreases the likelihood of any individual intervening.
