Libertarian Paternalism in Public Policy
Quick fact
Libertarian paternalism was coined by behavior economists Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler in 2003. It argues that it is both possible and legitimate for private and public institutions to influence people's behavior in ways that make their lives longer, healthier, and better—without restricting their freedom of choice.
Why this is interesting
Have you ever noticed how the way a cafeteria arranges its food influences what you choose? What if governments could use that same subtle power to help citizens make better decisions—without forcing anyone?
