Quick fact
Philosopher Jon Elster observed that in some of Aesop's fables, the fox who cannot reach the grapes decides they are sour—a perfect metaphor for how people may downgrade what they cannot have. This 'sour grapes' mechanism means that people living under oppression may develop preferences that actually support their own subordination.
