John Rawls' Veil of Ignorance

Quick fact

Rawls introduced the veil of ignorance in his 1971 book 'A Theory of Justice', arguing that rational individuals behind the veil would choose two principles: first, equal basic liberties for all, and second, social and economic inequalities only if they benefit the least advantaged.

Why this is interesting

Imagine you had to design a society, but you had no idea whether you would be born rich or poor, healthy or sick, into an ethnic majority or a persecuted minority. What rules would you choose to make that society fair for everyone?
