The Metaphysics of Causation and the Interventionist Account
Quick fact
The interventionist account defines causation in terms of what happens under ideal interventions: if changing X under such an intervention reliably changes Y, then X is a cause of Y. This approach, championed by James Woodward, is now a standard tool in the philosophy of science and underpins causal modeling in fields from epidemiology to economics.
Why this is interesting
We often say that flipping a switch causes the light to turn on. But what if the switch is connected in a way that sometimes the light stays on? How can we be sure that the switch is really the cause?
