Philosophy
The Social Epistemology of Group Belief and Collective Knowledge
Quick fact
Some philosophers argue that a group can have a belief that is not the belief of any individual member—a 'plural subject' that results from a joint commitment to accept a proposition as a body.
Why this is interesting
A jury declares someone guilty, a government announces a policy, a scientific panel issues a warning. But when we say 'the jury believes...' or 'the panel knows...', are we just talking about the individuals, or does the group itself have a mind?
