The Impact of Armed Conflict on Biodiversity in Protected Areas
Quick fact
During the Cambodian Civil War (1970-1995), tiger populations in some protected areas actually increased because rebels and government forces kept out poachers and developers. However, after the war ended, tiger numbers plummeted as the peace brought an influx of hunters.
Why this is interesting
When war breaks out, we often think of soldiers, not songbirds. Yet some of the most surprising winners and losers of armed conflict are found not on the battlefield, but deep inside the world's national parks.
