Understanding the Interstellar Medium through 21-cm Hydrogen Line Emission

Quick fact

The 21-cm line is produced by a hyperfine transition in neutral hydrogen, where the electron's spin flips relative to the proton. Although the probability is incredibly low (once per ~10 million years per atom), the total amount of hydrogen in galaxies makes this radiation bright enough to be detected from across the universe.

Why this is interesting

Every drop of hydrogen gas in space whispers a faint microwave secret. How can astronomers listen to the universe's most common element to map the hidden skeleton of our galaxy?
