Intersectionality Beyond Race and Gender

Coined by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality was originally used to show that Black women's experiences of discrimination were not captured by looking at racism or sexism separately—and the same logic applies to other combinations of identities.

Why this is interesting

Think about someone who is both disabled and an immigrant. Do they face the same barriers as a disabled person who was born here? Or an immigrant without a disability? Why are those experiences so different?
