Color Vision and Floral Signal Detection in Pollinating Bees

Quick fact

Bees have three types of color photoreceptors: one sensitive to ultraviolet (UV), one to blue, and one to green. Their visual system is shifted to shorter wavelengths than humans, allowing them to see UV patterns on flowers that act as 'nectar guides'—invisible to us, but leading them directly to the reward.

Why this is interesting

You see a field of flowers as a beautiful mix of reds, yellows, and blues. But a honeybee sees a completely different world—one where flowers glow with hidden ultraviolet patterns. How do bees use this secret visual language to find food, and how have flowers evolved to speak it?
