Vocal Learning and Cultural Transmission in Songbirds
Quick fact
Songbirds are one of only a few animal groups (along with humans, parrots, and hummingbirds) that learn their vocalizations by imitating others. A white-crowned sparrow raised in isolation sings a rudimentary, abnormal song, but if it hears a tutor's song during a brief sensitive window, it will faithfully copy that dialect and pass it to its own offspring.
Why this is interesting
A young sparrow, raised without hearing its father's song, grows up to sing a song no other sparrow understands. What is missing?
